Here we go again

On October 15, 2010, in The bump, The girl, by admin

About 15 months ago, last Christmas, Brandie and I shared with the world the most wonderful news. We were going to have a kid. What followed became the wildest roller coaster ride I’ve been on in a while. I started this blog as a way to take a different look at the process of bringing a kid into this world than the typical mommy blogger.

I had no clue what would happen. It ended up not ending as we hoped and the roller coaster went downhill quickly. But in that time we realized some really amazing people. You all cared for us in a way that was never expected and caught both of us off guard.

It all hurt a lot, but you all were there to help us pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off. Today we visited the doctor again, and I am happy to say looks like this time it is a go. Brandie is pregnant once again.

We have been overly cautious this time. We have cleared the time where things went wrong last time around and we are finally ready to share with you all who were so kind last time. I realize things can still go wrong, but we made a decision to tell family and you all have become a strange dysfunctional extended family.

So here is to one more round, and God help any kid that has me as a dad. I am sure it will be interesting.

Grandma seems a little more wild and crazy now

On February 11, 2010, in round 1, by admin

I remember growing up I use to always laugh at my grandma for going to bed so early. Most of the time she would go to bed around 9. On a wild and crazy night she would stay up and try to watch the news at 10. It always felt to me that she was sooo early getting to bed.

Now that I have a pregnant wife, grandma seems like a night owl. Last night after Blake Rutherford‘s big Movies in the Park announcement (which it appears my Wednesdays in June and July are now full) we went and grabbed a quick dinner and then came home. We got in about 7:30 and before 8 Brandie was curled up on the couch next to me asleep.

This has been a common thing since the first of January. I’ve heard everyone talk about how having a baby takes a lot out of you, so all you mothers can hold the comments about that. Although I do love getting comments on the blog, so please say something about it to give me motivation to keep writing. The thing is that you can be told this from everyone but until you sit there and watch her at 7:45 after doing almost nothing that day struggle to hold her head up and her eyes open while watching a (very boring granted) Razorback basketball game do you really appreciate just how tired they get.

As I look to our Chicago trip next week I am wondering how much we will actually get to do, and if she will even be able to make it through the Bulls game on Saturday night. I bet if I took grandma she would hang in there though, because she is wild and crazy like that.

For the record, pregnant women complain more about their clothes than non-pregnant women.

This happens rather oddly, at least for mine. Brandie started getting a pooch. Yet she wanted to deny it for as long as possible. There is this magical little time between when their clothes start to not fit and when they are willing to admit that they do not fit. After watching her change 10 times for the show at the Rep last night, I decided just to walk her into gap maternity just to see what her reaction would be.

Initially as I thought she was mad at me for the  idea of going ahead and buying a few maternity clothes. Despite the fact of course that her only remaining pair of jeans that fit are starting to cut into her a little. She went ahead with it and looked though, reluctantly.

Guys let me tell you, there are very few battles you want to pick with your pregnant wife, maternity jeans are worth it. She walked into the dressing room complaining about having to even try on maternity jeans and walked out proclaiming that these were the most comfortable pair of jeans that she has ever worn. Score one for the dad-to-be.

Things they don’t tell you: Food edition

On February 5, 2010, in Ask the dad, by admin

It seems like there are so many things that they do not tell you about this whole baby process. Food is turning out to be one of them.

I get the whole “odd things now suddenly go together” deal, that is pretty well documented. But at least so far the whole eating a lot is misleading.

For example, we went out to Whole Hog with a bunch of friends, partly because Brandie has this odd craving for BBQ chicken every since she smelled it cooking on the entire other side of Kroger one day.  So we go out to eat and she does not eat that much, which has been the norm lately, and she is miserable full after.

This is the thing, while yes pregnant women like to eat, they don’t eat like normal people. It seems they eat a whole lot because they have little bitty portions, or at least so far.

This seriously disrupts our eating. We fix a meal, she eats 1/4th of it, and then 2 hours later she is eating a bag of popcorn or snacking on something else. I can’t keep up. I feel like it has made me fatter because when she gets up to fix a snack she tries to share with me, and believe me I don’t need it.
