Help! My wife has baby legs hanging out

These were not hanging out of my wife after all

After a long week in Austin I was excited to get home and have another ultrasound and baby check last Friday. We go through the ultrasound quickly and move back to the room to talk to the doctor.

The nurse goes over the ultra sound notes and says “Oh, I see your baby is breech.” Now, I start freaking out a bit admittedly, and then without pausing as if it was an additional statement she said “the baby is head up, feet down.”

At this point I interjected and said “Should I take her to the hospital?” in a frantic type of tone. I got some very strange looks from both the baby momma and the nurse.

See, I am unfamiliar with the word “breech”* but it sounds exactly like the word “breach” which I do know. This means “to break through”. So at this very instant I am thinking that there are baby legs hanging out of my wife. Obviously this is something that requires immediate medical attention.

*For those of you wondering, “breech” simply means the baby is turned right side up. The nurse was clarifying, not adding to the original statement. Definitions and terminology matter. No hospital visit needed. The baby just needs to turn soon.

The dad-to-be freakout

^ There is a human in there ^

I am convinced at some point before a baby is born every dad has a little bit of a breakdown. At least that is what I try to tell myself to seem normal. A few weeks ago the baby momma and I were sitting around and it hit me. There is a human in my wife’s stomach.

Yes I understand how the whole pregnancy thing works, thanks for asking. But the actual realization that my wife has an actual human in her stomach freaks me out a bit. She eats, sleeps, moves, poops and all sorts of stuff. She is probably even listening in on our conversations. This blog is the only thing left that is safe since I have been assured she does not have an internet connected device up in there. I am still a bit skeptical though.

Previously there was a disconnect between the baby and the belly. The baby was this thing we saw occasionally on a TV at the doctor’s office. It looked like a little bean. Now it is growing and starting to take up room on my half of the bed at night. The dog has even retreated to the foot of the bed due to the growing scarcity of real estate around the middle where he typically slept.

The other night around 4 in the morning Brandie woke me up and put my hand on her belly. It Moved! I felt Ava kick (or punch) and then move her whole body around. There is absolutely no denying something is going on in there. The baby has become very real, and now I am starting to freak out a bit.
